Karaya is a natrual hydrocolloid and has excellent skin care properties. Karaya ostomy powder is most often used on open or denuded skin, the powder provides an absorptive and protective layer, allowing the wet skin to dry before applying the baseplate.  K-Gum (karaya gum powder) is a remarkable powder that absorbs moisture in open, weepy, skin and promotes granulation in open wounds.  Karaya powder is made from the highest quality karaya gum powder available and has the highest standards of uniformity, cleanliness, and performance.

How To Use Karaya Powder:

  • After bathing, pat dry the peri-stomal skin (skin around the stoma)

  • Dust K-Gum stoma powder onto skin peri-stomal skin that is red or irritated. Karaya will protect raw and weeping skin by creating a sticky gel.  Let powder dry or crust

Directed by my ET nurse, I sprinkled the karaya on my skin that was weepy consistently for about a week or so and it was AMAZING at how it cleared things up!

  2. Karaya Powder For Peristomal Skin

Posted by S. Richardson on 11th Jul 2012

K-Gum karaya powder from Parthenon is the first product to finally clear up the skin around my stoma. I've searched for years, using stomahesive powder, flat/convex wafers and anything else I could find that offered hope of healing peristomal skin. I was told by a nurse that karaya powder was an old remedy that worked really well having both absorbing and healing benefits. I tried the small 1 oz size Kgum at first and it cleared most of my skin up in a few weeks. Enough said.

Ostomy Paste and Ostomy Powder -- A Review of Current Ostomy Products (00:50)
Do I need to use ostomy paste? When do I need to use skin barrier powder?Ostomy Paste is used as a caulking agent to fill gaps and creases to even the area around the stoma. This allows a better seal and prevents leakage in the ostomy appliance.Ostomy Powder (pectin and karaya) protects raw and weeping skin by creating a sticky gel. It is used sparingly to absorb moisture or exudate from skin prior to placing a skin barrier on peristomal skin. It is convenient to use as squeeze bottle allows aeration of powder onto skin and the bottle has window for visualizing contents. The Parthenon Company located in Salt Lake City, UTAH specialized in ostomy supplies as well as wound care dressings, urologicals and nutrition for 50 years.
